Insider Secrets: How Designers Make Homes Feel Effortless

Blog

16 Jun

At Amanda Campbell Interiors, we believe that great design feels personal—and these insider tips help you create spaces that look effortlessly chic and truly lived-in. Try these subtle but clever secrets to elevate your home today.

1. Anchor With a Statement Piece

Every room needs a hero. Whether it’s a bold rug, an oversized pendant or a gallery-wall focal point, one standout item gives your space direction and personality.

Why this works: A statement piece acts as a visual anchor. It helps balance the room and sets a confident tone—everything else flows around it.

How to implement: Start your design by choosing one item you love—perhaps a sculptural light, colourful armchair or your favourite piece of art—and compose around it. Let that piece guide your palette and styling choices.

2. Mix, Don’t Match

The secret to a layered home is contrast. When you resist the urge to match everything, you uncover texture and finishes that bring depth and interest.

Why this works: Perfectly matched sets can feel flat. Mixing elements – think antique frames and sleek modern lamps – it tells a story and looks more curated.

How to implement: Try pairing warm brass hardware with matte black frames, or combining vintage finds with contemporary furniture. Keep the balance by repeating tiny elements—like a bit of brass in two or three places.

3. Layer Your Lighting

Forget one light, aim for three. A well-designed room uses ambient, task and accent lighting to create dimension, mood and function.

Why this works: Multiple lighting layers make a space feel dynamic and adaptable—from cosy evenings to bright workdays.

How to implement: Begin with ceiling or wall fixtures for ambient light, add a desk or reading lamp for tasks, then layer in accent lights like picture lights, candles or uplighters. And don’t forget a dimmer switch—it’s your instant mood setter.

4. Size Your Art Intentionally

Go big—or go home. Undersized art looks like an afterthought. Well-proportioned pieces create cohesion and confidence in your space.

Why this works: Appropriately scaled artwork draws the eye, anchors the space and shows you’ve thought it through.

How to implement: Use this simple rule: art should take up about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. If you prefer a cluster, arrange three or four pieces at consistent spacing with matching frames or tones for unity.

Pulling It All Together

These four design secrets are easy to test but transformative when layered:

  • Begin with a statement piece that speaks to you
  • Add contrast through mixed materials and textures
  • Light the room with intention (ambient, task, accent)
  • Choose artwork that feels deliberately chosen

That’s how you build a space that’s stylish, soulful—and unmistakably yours.

It is always amazing to receive such wonderful reviews from clients, and I absolutely loved working on this project.
"We're undertaking a full house renovation and whilst we had loads of ideas about what we liked colours and style wise, we felt a little overwhelmed with all the interior decisions we needed to make.
We appointed Amanda to support us with colour schemes across all rooms and a full interior design service for our open plan kitchen/diner and snug which will form the centre of our home. Amanda has been a pleasure to work with from the start and really understood our brief. She presented her schemes to us and we fell in love with them all.
We quite literally took her presentation to the decorators and said "here's your brief, go!" - she provided links to all paint colours, fabrics and product suggestions and has made the whole process so simple for us. We would recommend her without hesitation and cannot wait to complete our renovation now knowing our home will look beautiful and flow seamlessly from room to room."
